August 2005. Jantilu is a 40′ Richardson sedan cruiser that came in for repairs to damage on the port side. Six planks were repaired along with 4 ribs, the rub rail, as well as four ribs on the starboard side that had cracked. The boat ended up getting stripped and refinished and the decks were repaired and fiberglassed.

High Jinx is a 1962 Trojan 3400 Sea Voyager Express Cruiser which was purchased by the current owners in 2005. The boat came with a favourable survey and a binder full of the detailed repair history. As it turned out, the survey barely touched the surface of the problems the boat had, in fact the description of the construction details and scantlings seemed to be from another boat.
When I first saw the boat, the owners were using it on their vacation. She looked fairly sound, but obviously needed some plank repairs and a lot of cosmetic work. We decided that we would restore the boat in phases over the next couple of years and started with the plank repairs and new paint for the first year.
Unfortunately, as the planks started to come off, more problems became evident. The seal between the bulwarks and the decks had become porous which had caused most of the stucture below to rot. To make a long, painful story short: the boat had to be rebuilt from the chines up.
